Cover Genius appoints strategic partnerships director for retail in EMEA

Cover Genius has appointed Nelson Castellanos as its strategic partnerships director for retail in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Castellanos will oversee the insurance distribution platform provider’s new and existing partnerships with the largest retail brands across Europe.

His appointment follows the recent $10 million (£7.77 million) funding round, which will support Cover Genius’s investment in talent and its continued growth across the UK, US and into Asia.

Castellanos brings with him experience in consultancy, business development and relationship management across various industries.

His background will enable him to further Cover Genius’s offerings for online retailers. These include XCover, its customer-centric insurance and warranty solution, which is available across 60+ countries and 50 US states, as well as its instant claim payments service, XClaim, which pays approved claims in real time, via bank transfer, store credit, virtual prepaid card and credit card top-up in more than 90 currencies.

A native Spanish speaker, Castellanos was previously responsible for the Iberian market at global warranty and protection plan provider Square Trade, and building on his existing experience and knowledge, worked with a number of leading retail companies including Amazon and MediaMarkt.

In addition to spending more than two years at technology and digital transformation consultancy Capgemini, Castellanos expanded his experience into the logistics sector, working with global supply chain business XPO Logistics.

Angus McDonald, co-founder and chief executive officer of Cover Genius, said: “Our insurance distribution platform helps global retailers provide customer-focused insurance products that not only create an additional revenue stream, but enhance customer loyalty through our ability to tailor policies using a large network of insurers and provide instant payment for approved claims.”

“Cover Genius has experienced significant growth in the EMEA region, and Nelson’s extensive knowledge of the market will further bolster our presence in the retail sector.”

Castellanos added: “It’s an exciting time to be a part of this fast-growing insurtech. Cover Genius has developed an impressive portfolio of award winning insurance propositions, that combined with its global regulatory framework, makes it easy for all online retailers to provide protection for customers worldwide. I’m looking forward to working with retailers to strengthen their proposition on a global scale.”
