Sedgwick unveils UK’s first carbon-neutral repairs initiative

Sedgwick launches the UK’s first carbon-neutral repair programme, advancing sustainability in the insurance sector.

Sedgwick, a prominent global claims management and loss adjusting firm, has launched the UK’s first carbon-neutral repairs initiative. The new initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of insurance repairs.

The programme tracks the carbon emissions produced during repairs and offsets them by funding projects like reforestation and clean energy in less developed areas. This is made possible using Sedgwick’s proprietary carbon value calculator.

“This marks a pivotal step in our ESG journey,” commented Peter Wassell, technical director for Sedgwick’s repair solutions. He added, “We’ve taken great strides in measuring and understanding our carbon footprint, and now we’re going further by directly investing in solutions to offset it.”

“This programme not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also supports our clients in reducing their environmental impact.”

How it works

The company’s carbon value calculator precisely measures the carbon footprint of repair projects. For repairs tracked outside their system, Sedgwick uses an average CO2 figure based on project costs to ensure every repair is covered.

This dual approach allows Sedgwick to offset emissions accurately, no matter what tracking system is used.

First to mark

Sedgwick is the first repair network in the UK to offer carbon-neutral repairs.

“Our leadership in sustainability is a source of pride,” said Peter Farrelly, Sedgwick’s chief operating officer in the UK. “Not only are we offsetting emissions, but we are also driving internal changes, such as prioritising low-carbon materials to reduce overall carbon production.”

Addressing industry challenges

The move comes amid growing pressure for insurers and repair companies to adopt greener practices. As pressure grows for greener practices, Sedgwick’s initiative shows how the repair industry can adapt. By offering carbon-neutral repairs, they help insurers and customers meet rising expectations for sustainability.

By taking this step, Sedgwick aims to inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices across the industry.
