Grant hails fight against “compensation culture”

Justice Minister Helen Grant has said that the Government is “turning the tide on the compensation culture” with its latest reforms of the claims industry which have come into force this week.

As of 31 July, uncontested claims for compensation worth up to £25,000 for injuries at work (employer liability) or in public places (public liability) will be handled in the Claims Portal.

The Government believes that the changes will make no difference to the amount of compensation victims will receive for genuine claims, “but will reduce the unnecessary additional bills faced by insurers and enable them to pass on savings to customers”.

Referring to the drop in recoverable fees for claimant solicitors using the Portal, Grant said that Government was turning the tide on the compensation culture "which has pushed up the cost of insurance for drivers, schools and business – and taking another important step to reducing the cost of living for ordinary people,” said Grant.

The extended and update Portal went live at 7:00a.m. On 31 July, with Tim Wallis, the chairman of Claims Portal, re-iterating the importance for all correct claim handling accounts to be in place and that all organisations using the Portal are aware of how the different profiles and branches fit in with their user set-ups.
