NHS Litigation Authority appoints Mike Pinkerton as non-executive director

The NHS Litigation Authority (NHS LA) has appointed Mike Pinkerton as a non-executive director.

Pinkerton will step down from his current position as chief executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation at the end of this month to take up his new position, which will last for three years.

Pinkerton has completed nearly five years as chief executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and twenty years as an NHS board director. In the former role, he has overseen consistent year-on-year improvements in patient safety and quality, research and education.

He has extensive operational management and strategic experience across acute, mental health and community sectors, which was built on an earlier career in medical and industrial engineering. He was on the NHS general management training scheme and holds degrees in Bio Medical Electronics and Public Sector Management.

He has also maintained an interest in technology and innovation and has served with NICE on technology appraisal and been a board member of the Health Service Delivery Research Board and the Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network.

In addition to his wide experience of the NHS secondary care system, his first-hand experience of the challenges facing the leadership of a major trust will be invaluable to us as we continue to develop the support and services that we provide to members of our clinical negligence scheme.

“His appointment, together with the recently announced appointment of Dr Mike Durkin as an associate non-executive director, reflect our commitment to working collaboratively with other parts of the NHS to improve patient safety.”

Pinkerton said: “I am delighted to join the NHS LA at a point of renewal as an organisation dedicated to delivery of patient benefit, concern resolution and harm prevention. I hope to use my experience and focus to assist the Litigation Authority develop and implement its programme and effectively connect with its members and stakeholders in our shared mission to improve patient care.”
