Jet2 teams up with Mallorcan authorities to tackle growing issue of false sickness claims

Intelligence on individuals engaged in touting and creating false sickness claims will now be shared by Mallorcan Police, the Guardia Civil and Europol, who will in turn pass data to the UK police and the Ministry of Justice.

The initiative has come about following a meeting between Jet2holidays, the Mallorcan Hotel Federation, the Guardia Civil, the National Police Commissioner of Mallorca and the UK Ministry of Justice. The organisations have got together to discuss the issue of fake holiday sickness claims and to develop a strong and collaborative approach to tackling it.

This means that criminal cases can be pursued here in the UK, and the Ministry of Justice can use new information to take action against any claims management companies (CMC’s) or law firms engaged in pushing dishonest travel claims. As well as reaching an agreement to share intelligence between the UK and Mallorca, the parties agreed to make it easier to take criminal action against touts and to enforce severe sanctions against companies involved in false claims.

Alongside the Solicitors Regulation Authority recently announcing that it is ordering a number of law firms to prove how they have sourced claims, Jet2 said that this new international approach to tackle the growing issue of false sickness claims was another welcome step in the right direction.

“We hope to announce more similar cross-border partnerships soon and will continue to share updates,” said Jet2.

“It is shameful that this cynical claims industry exists, and is allowing the UK to be known as the ‘fake sick man of Europe’. We will continue to do everything we can to stamp it out, and we are confident that news like this will see honesty prevail.”
