NHS to pay almost £20 million to woman

A woman who suffered catastrophic brain injuries after being deprived of oxygen as a child will receive almost £20 million from the NHS to pay for her care.

The Cardiff & Vale University Health Board has agreed pay a lump sum of £2.1 million and £203,000 per year for the rest of her life.

The woman, 18, was left with catastrophic brain injuries when the hospital where she was treated as a five-month-old baby failed to give her enough oxygen.

A judging sitting in the High Court in Cardiff recently ruled that the hospital failed to properly ventilate the girl before and after she went into respiratory arrest.

Commenting on the news that the NHS had agreed to the £19.8 million settlement, Yvonne Agnew, head of clinical negligence at Slater and Gordon, which represented the unnamed woman, said they had to fight for years to secure justice and “to get the trust to admit their failings”.
