Independent insurance broker Premium Choice is planning to exploit next-generation telematics technology, including Amazon Alexa-powered Voice, to support the launch of its first dedicated insurance product in this area, after striking a new partnership with insurtech ThingCo.
Customers of the new product, known as Aura Insurance, will be sent Theo, ThingCo’s solar powered, voice-enabled telematics device, to self-fit to the windscreen of their car. In an accident, the in-built Voice feature enables the device to speak to the customer to check if they are okay and alert emergency services if necessary.
Second-by-second data collected by the device will also help support driver safety, deliver fair pricing based on actual mileage incurred, and create a smooth claims experience through ThingCo’s Smart FNOL process.
Founded in 1999, Premium Choice has sold more than one million policies and currently works with more than 20 prominent providers of competitive learner driver insurance through its A Choice brand.
Chris Pryor, head of telematics at Premium Choice, said: “Theo fits simply and quickly on the inside of any car windscreen so this, and the Voice capability really sold the device to us as the right solution for our first telematics product.”
“Our expertise at Premium Choice is in the young and inexperienced driver market as well as those with accident or motor conviction history so Voice will be hugely valuable in enabling us to support customers from the moment of impact, in a collision and we will be able to offer risk mitigating advice and tips based on their driving data.”
Pryor added: “Having this level of insight will also be key to us lowering claims loss ratios for our insurer partners. The other major advantage is we can confidently quote for low mileage policies when customers are unsure how much mileage they may incur over the next year, with the flexibility to top up if needed.”
Martin Williams, chief operating officer for ThingCo, added: “Premium Choice has taken the opportunity to harness next generation telematics technology to offer its customers and its insurer partners much more than conventional telematics solutions could offer. The granularity of the driving data opens up valuable opportunities at every stage of the customer journey and puts Premium Choice in a far more powerful position to control its claim costs.”
