Flood Re, the UK’s flood reinsurance scheme, has joined forces with the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA).
BIBA and Flood Re have teamed up to raise awareness about the Build Back Better (BBB) scheme and the importance of Property Flood Resilience (PFR). The partnership aims to educate insurance brokers across the country on how these initiatives can help reduce the damage and costs caused by future floods.
Starting on 4 September in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, representatives from Flood Re will join BIBA’s executive team on a regional tour, which will stop in key cities including Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Leeds, and Holywood in Northern Ireland. This tour is part of Flood Re’s broader effort to ensure brokers fully understand the benefits of BBB and PFR and can effectively communicate them to their clients.
What is the Build Back Better (BBB) scheme?
The BBB scheme, launched in July 2022, offers homeowners up to £10,000 to install flood resilience measures when repairing their properties after a flood. These measures are designed to prevent water from entering the home or to make it easier and quicker to clean up if it does. The goal is to help homeowners get back to normal life faster after a flood, reducing the overall impact on their lives and finances.
PFR isn’t just about what happens inside the home—outside spaces also play a role. At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, Flood Re showed a Flood Resilient Garden, demonstrating how landscaping can help mitigate flood risks through dense planting, storing rainwater, and carefully planned elevation.
With the onset of climate change, the UK is more vulnerable to sudden storms and severe flooding. Only in January this year, Claims Media reported that the UK government had to provide financial support to businesses and individuals in the wake of Storm Henk.
Kelly Ostler-Coyle, head of communications and stakeholder relations at Flood Re, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming tour: “We’re excited to work closely with BIBA and meet brokers face-to-face. It’s important that they understand how the Build Back Better scheme works and the crucial role of Property Flood Resilience. Education is key to helping communities better prepare for future floods.”
BIBA’s CEO, Graeme Trudgill, also highlighted the importance of this initiative: “Our regional tour is essential for engaging with our members. Building flood resilience is a top priority for BIBA, and we’re pleased that Flood Re is joining us to ensure brokers are well-informed. This partnership will help brokers deliver better outcomes for customers, especially those in flood-prone areas.”
