Towergate Insurance is warning small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the UK to take urgent action to protect their staff, property and equipment ahead of the upcoming summer heatwave, with temperatures forecast to surge across the country in the coming days.
The broker emphasises that extreme heat can significantly impact productivity, pose health risks to employees, damage sensitive equipment, and increase the potential for claims.
“Heatwaves are becoming a more frequent risk for UK businesses,” said a Julie Newble, Head of Claims, Towergate Insurance. “Many SMEs are unprepared for the challenges extreme temperatures can bring — from overheated premises and failing equipment to potential liability issues if employees or customers are affected on site. Taking action now can help avoid unnecessary disruption.”
Towergate is advising business owners to check air conditioning and ventilation systems, carry out safety checks on electrical equipment, and ensure workplaces are adequately prepared with extra water, cooling measures and contingency plans for vulnerable staff. Flexible working hours can also help employees avoid peak heat periods.
Towergate also reminds businesses of the importance of checking their insurance cover in advance. “It’s important to have the right commercial property insurance in place, so you’re protected if the worst happens. This will help to protect your property against heat-related damage, and offers public liability cover in the event of someone being injured on your property due to heat-related incidents,” added Julie Newble. “It’s crucial SMEs know what their policy includes and what to do if they need to make a claim. A quick review now with your broker or insurer can save time and stress later.”
